Training and Certification for Indonesia’s Renewable Energy Labour Market

The transition to renewable energy technologies (RETs) plays a key role in Indonesia’s commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, completing the electrification of the country and progressing toward energy sovereignty.

The government’s National Energy Plan (Regulation No. 79/2014) has set a target to increase the share of renewable energy in the total energy mix from the current 6% to at least to 23% by 2025.

The expansion of RETs is an essential component of Indonesia’s progress toward energy sovereignty, and in line with Sustainable Development Goal number 7: ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

As Indonesia continues to develop RETs, the country will require knowledgeable and skilled manpower to design, install, operate, repair and maintain these new energy systems. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has estimated that Indonesia will need an additional 70,000 renewable energy professionals by 2025.

PEKA SINERGI addresses Indonesia's growing needs by developing a system of training and certification for the renewable energy technology workforce.

Funded by the Green Knowledge Grant under the Millennium Challenge Account – Indonesia, the project will develop national competency standards for RET professionals (Standar Kompetensi Kerja Nasional Khusus – SKKK), certified trainers and assessors for RET and a professional RET association (Lembaga Sertifikasi Profesi – LSP).

Teachers from twelve SMKs will be trained in RET competencies, and schools will be provided with equipment so that they can train their students for jobs in the RET workforce. UNRAM and TEDC will be outfitted as with RET facilities and established as RET assessment centres (Tempat Unji Kompetensi – TUK) capable of offering training and certification programs to both recent graduates and people already in the workforce.
